RELIGION
Religion played, and still plays a very important
part of the Rural German life. How important was Religion and how did it affect the daily lives of the people
of the German-Russian Volga Colonies?
I
lived in the small, rural farming
village
of
Hoppachshof, Kreis Schweinfurt,
Bavaria,
Germany
for a little over two years. When I first arrived, I attended their annual
community church party. Everyone in the village comes, and I do mean everyone.
It was a great way to get to know the local people. In polite conversation, I
was asked, "what religion are you?" It got kind of quiet around the table
while they all waited for my answer. I replied that I was born and baptized a
Lutheran. Dead Silence!.. Long extended pause!.. And then someone said,
"Hoppachshof is a
Catholic
Village, but I was welcome to attend church anyway because a Lutheran is ALMOST a
Catholic, and that after a while they would get me to come back to the Catholic
side." With that, everyone laughed, and the fun continued. The nearest
Protestant church (called Evangelical in
Germany) was about 5 miles distant in a Protestant village. This illustrates the
importance of RELIGION even today in rural
Germany. Religion is a day-to-day part of their lives. The bells ring on the
hour, and ring even more often to call the villagers to the church for worship.
