PRE-GERMANIA HISTORY

I was able to gather a tremendous amount of information on the development of the Celt and Germanic tribes of Germania, and of their interaction with the Romans, and eventual replacement by the Goths and the Franks. Where did they all come from? 

The Celts or Kelts was a tribe (or tribes) of a very early Indo-European people who from 2000 BC to 100 BC spread over much of what is now Europe. The origin of the Celts has not been fully determined. Two Celtic tribes called the Cimbri and the Teutones ("Teuton," an ethnic for Germans comes from the Celtic root for "people"), emigrated east and settled in Germany. The center of Celtic expansion, however, was Gaul, which lay north of the Alps in the region now within the borders of France and Belgium and part of Spain. The original areas of inhabitation in Gaul were along the Rhein, Main, and Neckar Rivers. At this time, the forest areas were just too dense to inhabit. Historical artifacts found near the Frankfurt area document this period of Celt society. Remember that this was a loosely connected society, and with no future plan, the Celt tribes and groups eventually ranged from the British Isles and northern Spain to as far east as Transylvania, the Black Sea coasts, and Galatia in Anatolia. Eventually, they were absorbed into the Roman Empire as Britons, Gauls, Boii, Galatians, and Celt Iberians.
