VOLGA COLONY LIFE
The lives of the German-Russian Volga Colonists were unbelievably harsh and difficult. How did they survive and prosper?
One
of the reasons that they survived may have been their strong belief in Family
and Tradition. The
tradition of generations of families living together in one place in extended
families was very important in the German-Russian Volga Colonies. There was
always plenty of work to be done, but there were always many willing people to
do it. There was a strict division of what labor was appropriate and expected
for men and women. The men worried about the agriculture and the cattle
breeding. The women concerned themselves with the house, kitchen, cellar, garden
and the education of the children. However, when the crops came in and it was
time to harvest, the call was "all hands to the fields."
